Zack Greinke on the cusp of history.

I don’t think a lot of people realize just how special Zack Greinke’s run of 6-0 with a .40 ERA is.

With his win last night, Greinke joined the elite company of just two men: Fernando Valenzuela and Walter Johnson.

These three pitchers occupy a special place in baseball domination that’s seen once every half-century or so. They are the only three pitchers since the invention of the ERA stat to start the season 6-0 with an ERA under 1.00.

Best pitcher of all time?Fernando mania.

They represent the small group of pitchers that completely control a game.

To run toe-to-toe with this sort of company is not a fluke.

Throughout the 1980’s, few pitchers were better than Valenzuela. While he is unfortunately best known for “Fernando Mania,” the chubby Dodger’s lefty finished in the top 5 in Cy Young award voting 4 times. He never replicated 1981, but he came close.

To be mentioned in the same sentence as the Washington Senator’s Walter Johnson is a career highlight in itself. The “Big Train” is one of the Hall of Fame’s initial five members. He won 417 games over 21 seasons and owns a career ERA of 2.17. You have to understand Johnson’s place in baseball history to truly appreciate what Greinke is doing.

I have goosebumps over it.

We are witnessing history.

The next in line.
